The Non-Money Side of Retirement
Open your eyes to the new world welcoming you!
There was a time when our grandfathers used to boast of their leisurely years of retirement while you were slogging it out at work. What they didn’t tell you about were the questions that arose and kept them awake in the night once they retired.
What would you do when you’re free? Is it enough to potter around in the garden or napping under a tree? Is it enough to go for long walks or travel to a destination of your choice? Will I have enough money from my pension plans and my social security to see me through the long months or retirement?
Retirement is a long period that can become tiresome if something is not done about it.
We don’t like to talk about it, but the fact is once we stop working, we start searching for some meaning and direction. In such times what you do need to do is ask yourself: What are my passions?
You may have possibly forgotten them or kept them hidden even from your spouse due to family and money matters taking precedence in the early days of your career. Try working on those passions again.
First step towards it could be to write down some thoughts as:
- what achievements in your life you are most proud of
- What you would do if you inherited enough to never again have to worry about money.
Possibilities are your hidden passions may come out. Maybe you want to go for a long walk along the Appalachian Trail or take up pottery or do bird watching or do volunteer work in some developing country or a local non profit organization. The key is to zero in upon activities that could
fulfill you and be affordable on a retiree’s income. For these reasons there is a relatively new market for advisory services in non-financial retirement planning. Our coaches and advisors are available online to help you find a purpose and map out the next phase of your life.
